Ironman 70.3 Weymouth, 2018. Block 1

Aaaand that's the first 3 weeks of Ironman 70.3 training over. It's been a great start, my motivation hasn't dropped although there have been a couple of sessions needing some strong conversations with my inner chimp at 6am. Apparently 12th January is the day after New Year when most people give in to resolutions. I didn't and won't be doing that.

The biggest breakthrough has been swimming. Thank goodness as that's been the main focus of these first 3 weeks! I'm not a natural, more arm flailing and windmill than anything graceful. However, a session of Total Immersion coaching has made me so much more confident that I LOVE being in the pool. I've gone from gasping after 25 metres and taking 42 minutes to do 400m to 10 x 100 metres taking 31 minutes. That's HUGE gains at this point. Some more TI sessions with coach James Ewart over the coming months should see me hit and exceed the minimum times for the Ironman 70.3 swim.

There have been a few kit additions too. Jammer swim shorts, Saucony road and trail shoes. Last but not least, a crank-based power meter for my trusty bike. That's a revelation in itself. Thank you to Kieran for the chats about that. MasterCard also send their love.

It's now time for a gentle week as I'm feeling fatigued. The next focus will be running, building up to 12km at a good pace and working on swimming form rather than distance. I've also got the Sussex Maverick Race at the end of February to aim for. 13km of trail running which will be awesome!

Thank you to everyone for all the kudos, it's very motivating. And thank you for all the kind and supportive words that come via different messaging channels. They mean a lot and are great to reflect on.

Whatever your goals are this year, go smash them!
